I like very much to learn different languages because I like to travel and communicate with the people. I was born in a German descendent family in the South of Brazil. As a child, I learn first German at home and then come later Portuguese. Well, in the School I had basic English and we joke always that you can pass the school final test if you can say and write: The book is on the table! That’s all… but it was not enough for the life later. Actually, I speak Portuguese, German, English, a bit Spanish and now learning Polish.
Portuguese I say is my mother language and is also my school language. I lived in Brazil until I was 24 years old, so, all schooling was in this language. That is the absolute best way to learn a language, you are born in it! It’s just natural.
German is my father language. I move at the age of 24 to Germany and I was sure I’m speaking German. Oh, I had to pass many situations that people ask me what I really mean. Humour was necessary to handle my Brazilian-German knowledge. But, it was already a good basis for communication and of course I had to improve it. I never visit a German course to learn the language, all that I know was learned in life.
In Brazil is English a second must language in the schools. Unfortunately, it was very basic level in the time I was schooling. But I get the start to the future improvement. For me was more easy to read than to speak because I don’t have with whom I could train it.
Then happen that I know my husband and I like so much talk with him, but he is Polish and was speaking Polish and English. Well, reason enough to go out from the comfort zone and start speaking. So I start speaking English!
The point is: if you have the opportunity, speak! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!
That is my actual challenge! This language is not easy to learn, because it is a West Slavic language and have a different structure. Have only some common words with German, but not really much. What I’m doing to learn it? As first, I buy two books with CDs, beginner level and I made all lessons. Now I’m learning on the internet watching videos. The biggest help is to be in Poland, so I must talk sometimes with people here and so I’m learning. The best way to learn a language is to be in the Country and really speak. I know many persons that were living in other countries for more than 10 years and never learn the local language.
The contact must be with native people, not only with other immigrants. My suggestion: do not build or live in a community from your own nationality where you get help always. Go, speak and do your best and it will come the moment that you feel that is going ahead!
Do you have experience with a move to a country with a different language?
Pozdrawiam i do widzenia!
